In our tutorial, we'll use Semrush. It is a simple, user-friendly, and powerful tool to understand your competitors' strategies.
Step 1: Create a Semrush Account
The first thing you need to do before starting your competitor analysis is to create a Semrush account.
You only need an email address for a new account. Enter your email address, choose a password, and click the Create Account button to start. Alternatively, you can sign in with Google.
After creating your account, you'll receive a confirmation email. Enter the code on the next screen.
Step 2: Go to the Domain Overview Report
The Domain Overview report is a great way to quickly see what your competitors are doing. Go to the Domain Overview tab and enter your competitor's domain (URL) in the search bar, then click the Search button.
Semrush will generate a report containing traffic estimates, traffic distribution by country, organic keyword trends, top organic keywords, branded traffic estimates, backlinks, and more.
Step 3: Examine Your Competitor's Keywords
Take a closer look at your competitor's keywords. In the Domain Overview report, go to the Top Organic Keywords section and click the blue View Details button.
In this report, you'll see a list of your competitor's top keywords. You can see how much traffic they're getting for these keywords, how difficult they are, and more.
Step 4: Check Your Competitor's Top Pages
Analyze which of your competitor's pages bring the most traffic. When you can see your competitor's pages that attract the most traffic, you can create better content on similar topics.
Step 5: Do Keyword Research
Research a specific keyword. Go to the Keyword Overview tab, type your keyword, and click the Search button.
Step 6: Click Backlink Analytics
After finding keyword opportunities and new content ideas, you can boost your ranking by examining your competitors' backlinks.
Backlinks play an important role in your website's ranking on Google. Using the Semrush backlink report, you can find ideas for building backlinks to your site.
