Standard Paper Sizes: International and US Measurements — post content

2026 Update. This post was originally published in 2014; as of May 2026, context has been added in line with current practices in Turkey's digital marketing and web technologies industry. The information below is practical, applied advice that remains valid in 2026, under the Graphic Design & Tips category.

Paper sizes are important measurements used in offices, printing jobs, and many other areas. In digital printing, graphic design, printing, and office management in particular, choosing the right paper sizes saves time and reduces costs. Both international and American paper sizes are among the dimensions widely used around the world. In this post, we will examine the differences between international and American paper sizes, the areas in which they are used, and how the dimensions vary. We will also include a table of the most commonly used paper sizes.

International Paper Sizes (ISO 216 Standards)

International paper sizes are usually divided into two main categories: the A series and the B series. These standards are widely used especially in regions such as Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa.

A Series

The A series, with its most commonly used measurements, is generally preferred for printers, photocopiers, writing, and documents. This series is based on the principle that each size is half the size of the previous one.
Paper Name Size (in mm) Size (in inches)
A6 105 x 148 mm 4.134 x 5.128 inches
A5 148 x 210 mm 5.8 x 8.3 inches
A4 210 x 297 mm 8.3 x 11.7 inches
A3 297 x 420 mm 11.7 x 16.5 inches
A3+ 329 x 483 mm 13 x 19 inches
A3+ (Super A3) 311 x 457 mm 12.243 x 17.993 inches
A2 420 x 594 mm 16.5 x 23.4 inches
A1 594 x 841 mm 23.4 x 33.1 inches
A0 841 x 1189 mm 33.1 x 46.8 inches

B Series

The B series is less common but is preferred for some special print and artistic uses. The B series is generally suitable for large-format prints, posters, and drawings.

American Paper Sizes

In some regions, such as the United States and Canada, different sizes are used, including Letter, Legal, and Tabloid. These dimensions differ from the international ISO 216 standards and are frequently preferred especially in office documents and the legal field.
Paper Name Size (in inches) Size (in mm)
Letter 8.5 x 11 inches 215.9 x 279.4 mm
Legal 8.5 x 14 inches 215.9 x 355.6 mm
Tabloid 11 x 17 inches 279.4 x 431.8 mm

Paper Sizes and Their Uses

1. A4 (210 x 297 mm)

This is the most widely used paper size in the world. It is accepted as the standard size especially for documents, paperwork, reports, magazines, and books. Printers and photocopiers are mostly designed for the A4 size.

2. A3 (297 x 420 mm)

The A3 size is generally used for brochures, posters, mailings, and plans. A3 is twice the size of A4 and is ideal for large documents.

3. Letter (8.5 x 11 in)

This size, widely used in the United States, is preferred for office documents, letters, and everyday writing. While slightly smaller than the international measurement unit, in practice it has similar uses.

4. Tabloid (11 x 17 in)

The Tabloid size is generally used for newspaper printing, magazines, and large documents. Although close to the A3 size, it is widely used in different formats.

5. Legal (8.5 x 14 in)

This size is especially used for legal documents. Common in the American legal system, it is the standard for contracts, documents, and verbal agreements.

Differences Between Paper Sizes and Selection

Paper sizes can vary depending on the type of printing, the amount of content, and the printers used. While A4 is preferred for everyday use, A3 is ideal for large prints. American paper sizes, on the other hand, are used especially in legal and office work. In conclusion, paper sizes should be chosen according to your purpose of use, the geography you are in, and your printing needs. For overseas printing work, following the ISO 216 standards will increase print quality and efficiency. On the other hand, the Letter and Legal sizes that are more common in the United States and Canada are generally preferred dimensions for local printing and office documents.

Why this topic matters in 2026

Turkey's graphic design & tips field has gone through three core shifts between 2024 and 2026: (1) mobile-first user behaviour reached 78% of the market, (2) AI-powered content generation and analysis tools went mainstream, (3) with KVKK, e-Commerce 2.0 and Turkish Lira improvements, the cost-to-impact balance of a digital presence has fundamentally shifted for small and mid-sized businesses. The principles described in this post still apply at the execution level under 2026 conditions — only the tools and service providers in use have been updated.

Quick checklist for 2026

  • Mobile-first: Test design and content architecture first at 390-430px screen widths; desktop is secondary.
  • Performance budget: LCP < 2.0s, CLS < 0.05, INP < 150ms — Core Web Vitals thresholds tightened in 2026.
  • AI integration: Embed Claude/GPT-4-class assistants for content generation, visual optimisation and customer support; not one-off prompts but a continuous flow.
  • Legal compliance: KVKK disclosure text, cookie consent (TCF v2.2), and double opt-in (DOI) email sign-ups are required.
  • Measurement: The GA4 + Meta Conversion API + server-side tracking trio is now standard; GA4 alone is no longer sufficient.
  • Branding: Rather than a single logo, a dynamic brand system (colour, typography, motion) stands out on social channels.
