Until just a few years ago, there was no real concept of a mobile application, but right now all applications have reached the 1 million threshold. In fact, according to figures shared by Mobilewalla, the total number of all applications on all app stores is just 1 week away from passing 1 million.
The total of applications developed for Apple, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows smartphones is currently 989,476. Under normal conditions, an average of 2,000 new apps are added to app stores each day, but this number rises further especially before important holiday periods like New Year's. Even so, if we assume 2,000 will be added per day, the 1 million threshold will be passed next week on Tuesday or Wednesday.
As you can guess, Apple is far ahead of its competitors in the number of applications. But when looking at the new applications added in the last 12 months, the difference is not that big...
According to Mobilewalla's figures, Apple currently offers 59.95% of all existing applications with 590,138 apps. Following it, Android has 320,315 apps with a 32.54% share. BlackBerry has a 4.42% share with 43,544 apps and finally Windows has a 3.60% share with 35,479 apps.
In other words, more than half of the mobile applications currently on the market are in Apple's store. When looking at the number of new applications added in the last 12 months, Apple is again ahead. In this period, the number of new applications Apple has begun offering is around 251,000. In the same period, slightly more than 204,000 applications were added to the Android Market.
Apple's app store grew by approximately 74% in 12 months, while the Android Market grew by 177%.
With the increasing rate of mobile usage and the proliferation of high-value applications offered to users, it is certain that reaching 2 million applications will take much less time.
