How to Mass Delete All Your Old Tweets — post content
If you are an active Twitter user, the hundreds or thousands of tweets you have posted in the past may not reflect your current identity.
Maybe you praised celebrities who have since been involved in scandals, you now share family photos through a more professional account, or you made negative comments about the industry you work in. In such cases, deleting old tweets can make sense.
If you have shared this kind of content, Isha Cogborn, the founder of the Epiphany Institute, which helps subject experts share their messages and create their personal messaging, says, "There aren't many disadvantages to getting rid of it," especially noting that this kind of editing is important for brands.
However, deleting old tweets is not easy with Twitter's standard tools. To delete tweets one by one, you may need to go back or search by specific words and time periods. Twitter doesn't directly offer bulk tweet deletion; however, by creating a new account and changing your username with the existing account to a new one, you can change your username to a new account while keeping your old tweets. This way, you can have a fresh start without your old tweets.
Below are several external tools and services that can make these processes easier. Most services are paid, and you may need to grant access to your account and forgo some privacy sharing. These tools can see your tweets, profile information, account settings, accounts you follow and block, and other data. When you connect any third-party service, you can revoke this access at any time from Twitter's application settings page.
If you want to take a copy of your tweets before deleting them, you can download your Twitter data file to get a complete list of your tweets in .zip format. This process can take a few days.
Melissa Agnes, founder and CEO of the Crisis Ready Institute, says you should be transparent about why this step is being taken before you start deleting. Agnes says you can take an honest approach by tweeting an explanation of your decision to delete specific tweets or all of them. Openness can be better than hiding anything. If you try to hide it, this can lead to you "appearing as if you are sneaky or manipulative."
Cogborn notes that deleting tweets does not always mean they will be lost forever. Someone can always take a screenshot. Cogborn says, "When you face an embarrassing situation, you need to own up to your mistakes, give a sincere apology and make smarter choices in the future."
